Production introduces retrieval drift — gradual degradation of retrieval quality that erodes answer accuracy invisibly over weeks. Model behavior shifts after vendor updates with no announcement. The Mistake Is Treating LLMs Like Deterministic Software

Four assumptions destroy enterprise AI deployments.

“It worked yesterday.” LLMs drift. Model updates and stochastic variance introduce behavioral shifts over time. Yesterday’s output does not guarantee today’s.

“The model is smart enough.” Intelligence is not the operational issue. Stochastic instability is.
